Christopher Ilth
The invention of the art form collage has its roots indebted to the movement known as Dada. During this period we saw the bold and dynamic creation of combining the found print and text to create a revolutionary art form. The act of making such work in the 1920’s was ground breaking on many levels—especially for typography. The problem with collage is that after this period the attempt to engage in this medium has produced countless terrible objects. The secret lies in strong compositional ability and design. The work of Chris Ilth pays respect to the founders of this language and it seems that he is there with them. I am fascinated with the ability to continue this tradition with such clarity, excitement and inventiveness long after the passing of this period. The imagery harkens back to this time and is done so well that we feel that we are there ready to go to a party with Schwitters, Ernst, and Duchamp.
